Opened in 1999, McGill Field has won acclaim as one of college baseball’s best ballparks. The 2000 Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) College Baseball Field of the Year, McGill Field has set the standard for quality in college baseball facilities, rivaling home fields of many Division I programs.
The diamond is named for Senior Vice President and Dean of the Faculty Emeritus Dr. William McGill, and his wife, Ellen, in recognition of their generous gift and in honor of his years of service as dean. Set into the side of a hill, the field boasts a 500-seat grandstand, curved nine-foot outfield wall patterned in alternate shades of brown and red brick, and is landscaped with pear trees and flowering perennials that enclose the field. The unique Fasick Bridge stands beyond right field, serving as a gateway to McGill Field from LVC’s campus.
In 2000, McGill Field earned the STMA College Baseball Field of the Year award to recognize the outstanding condition of the playing surface. The Field of the Year award is the highest honor the STMA bestows upon a facility. McGill Field beat out a record number of entrants, including parks from all three NCAA divisions. To date, McGill Field is one of only two NCAA Division III facilities to earn STMA field of the year honors.
