How It Happened
YORK, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's baseball team was eliminated from the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Tournament after falling 8-6 to Widener on Saturday afternoon. The Pride, who moved to 26-13, will take on the loser of Alvernia/Arcadia, who are set to play later tonight. The Dutchmen's season ended at 20-18. Today's game officially took five hours and nine minutes due to more than an hour-long rain delay in the sixth inning.
With Widener ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth,
Michael Puglisi hit his second home run in as many games on a 2-2 pitch to even the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Pride got one back with a single to right-center to go back ahead by one at 2-1. After Widener added one in the fifth, Marshall Kiessling's RBI-single through the left side brought LVC to within one at 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pride opened up a four-run lead thanks to three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Widener added two more in the bottom of the seventh to go up 8-2 heading into the eighth, but LVC certainly wasn't done yet. In the top of the eighth, Puglisi singled home
Zac Edwards, following by a Kiessling double down the right field line to plate
Philip Berry and make it 8-4. Later in the inning,
Joshua Marcelling singled to score Puglisi and
Chase Weik followed with another RBI-single to make it an 8-6 score.
After Widener was held to a scoreless bottom of the eighth, LVC had one more chance to score a pair of runs.
Chris DeClerico singled in the inning, but the Dutchmen couldn't get anything going and the Pride held on for the narrow 8-6 win.
