How It HappenedLebanon Valley defeated Albright 2-1 in the MAC Commonwealth's first round match on Tuesday afternoon at Herbert Field and advanced to the conference semifinal, which takes place at No. 1 Messiah on Thursday at 6 p.m.
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the closing minutes of the second half, it seemed that the contest was destined for overtime. However,
Sammy Bost thought otherwise when she received a tremendous pass from
Meghan Ross inside the box and beat Lions' goaltender Payton Bogatch with just over three minutes remaining in the second half.
The Dutchmen faced no real threats for the rest of the game and kept the ball in Albright's end, not allowing any scoring chances en route to the 2-1 victory.
After no goals were scored in the first half, LVC broke through in the 61st minute of the second when
Teanna Shutt was tripped inside the box, resulting in the penalty kick. The midfieder took advantage of the situation and beat Bogatch to the right side to give the Dutchmen a one-goal lead.
The Lions got even, however, just seven minutes later when an LVC foul resulted in a free kick for Albright about 25 yards from the box. Rebecca Mallon kicked a good ball to the box, and Megan O'Brien one-timed it home to tie the game at 1-1. That score remained until Bost stepped up and delivered for LVC in crunch time.
Inside the Numbers - The Dutchmen dominated in shots (23-5) and shots on goal (7-2).
- LVC also held a strong advantage in corner kicks at 5-1.
- Shutt had seven shots, three on net, while
Johnna Garbrick recorded six shots and Bost tallied four total shots.
-
Taylor Reinhold won her 10th game of the season and made a save.
Bost Ties for Career Goals RecordWith her late tally today, Bost is now tied with Nicole Snyder (2009-12) for the program's career goals record at 45.
Last Time We Faced MessiahLVC last met the No. 1 team in the country back on Oct. 7 when Messiah came away with the 5-0 win. The Falcons recorded 23 shots on the night (13 on goal), while both of the Dutchmen's shots were saved by Audra Larson.
