RADNOR, Pa. – An Eastern goal in the 86th minute proved to be the gamewinner as the Lebanon Valley men's soccer team dropped its first game of the year, a 3-2 decision on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles came out of the gates firing, taking a 1-0 lead just 0:59 into the contest on a shot from JD Saracco that ricocheted off LVC senior goalkeeper James Clements and into the back of the net. The goal was the first Clements has given up this season, coming into the game with three straight clean sheets.
Less than 10 minutes later, Eastern's Mitch Osterhouse placed an Eric Giovagnoli cross into the back of the net to send the Eagles to a 2-0 lead. They would hold that lead into the halftime break, but the Dutchmen gave Eastern a taste of their own medicine coming out of halftime.
At the 46:30 mark, freshman Josh Ferguson finished a pass from sophomore Cam Alexander to make it a one goal game at 2-1. Just 30 seconds later, Ferguson and Alexander connected again as Ferguson chipped the ball up over the goalie to tie the game at two apiece and give the rookie his fifth goal in the past three games.
The majority of the second half after that point was back and forth before a give and go play from Eastern's Brandon Beaumont and Josh Cirocco fooled Clements and found the back of the net for the 3-2 lead. That lead held for the final minutes to send LVC to its first loss.
The Eagles held a 15-6 shot advantage in the contest, as well as a 6-4 corner kick edge. Clements, despite allowing three goals, did make five saves on the afternoon.
Ferguson and junior Kevin Doty led the way offensively for the Valley with two shots apiece, while Alexander and junior Kyle Fronk added one shot each.
Next up for LVC is a trip to Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
