ANNVILLE, Pa. – An Alvernia go-ahead goal to begin the second half was all the Crusaders needed to take care of the Lebanon Valley men's soccer team, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Herbert Field.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Alvernia's Alex Martyn found open space down the left side of the field, shooting an initial shot off the hands of LVC senior goalkeeper
James Clements. Off the rebound, Josh Wollaston's hit ricocheted off the crossbar until, finally, Martyn was able to find the back of the net to give the Crusaders the 2-1 lead.
Alvernia got on the board early as just over a minute into the contest, TJ Leiter went near corner on a sharp angle shot to beat Clements for the early 1-0 edge. Sophomore
Cam Alexander answered in the 19th minute as he took advantage of a defensive breakdown and found an open spot in the left side of the cage to tie the game at two.
However, Martyn's goal would prove to be the end of the scoring as Alvernia went on to win it, 2-1. Clements took his fifth loss of the year, making eight saves with two goals allowed. Alexander was the shot leader for the Dutchmen with six threats.
The Crusaders held the 17-10 edge in shots and LVC worked seven corner kicks compared to just two for Alvernia, but were unable to convert. The loss slides LVC to 6-5-2 on the year with the Valley still looking for its first Commonwealth Conference win at 0-3-0.
Next up for the Dutchmen is a trip to Stevenson on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
