W. Lax Holds Off M'Ville in Thriller, 13-12

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley held off a Manhattanville rally with a late defensive stand as they won, 13-12, in a thriller at Arnold Field on Saturday.

The Dutchmen (5-4, 3-3 MAC) went above .500 with the win as they withstood a three-goal run by the Valiants (3-9, 3-4 MAC) at the end of the game after taking a 13-9 lead.

Goalkeeper Erica Ameigh made 11 of her 12 saves in the second half, including three in the final 38 seconds to preserve the one-goal lead. The LVC defense repelled two free positions attempts in the final minute, with one being saved and the other being checked away by Chloe Gunther before a shot could be taken.

Hana Krechel led Lebanon Valley offensively with four goals, three of them from the arc, and four other Dutchmen - Allison McGinniss, Suzanne Sullivan, Kristin Clift, and Rachel Murkey - scored two apiece. Darby Webber led all player with five goals.

Manhattanville was dominant in the circle, winning 20 of 27 draw controls including eight by taker Jen Ascencio, but the Valiants were hurt by 30 turnovers and 1-for-8 free-position shooting as they failed to convert their chances. M'ville outshot LVC 31-23 overall.

Meanwhile, the Dutchmen converted a season-high five goals from the arc as they went 5-for-8 on free positions.

LVC never lost the lead after an early 2-2 tie, taking an 8-5 edge at halftime before the Valiants started the second half with two goals. It stayed a two-goal game for most of the second half until a three-goal spurt by Murkey, Amanda Cubbage, and Clift gave the Dutchmen a three-goal cushion at 13-9 with 13:05 to go.

Manhattanville rallied however, with Kirsten Spelman scoring with 11:51 to go before Webber scored a pair 1:13 apart. M'ville's Callie Housser won the ensuing draw and earned a quick free-position chance that was saved by Ameigh, and Brittany Kreider scooped up the deflection as LVC went on to kill more than four minutes off the clock.

The Valiants finally got possession back with 1:41 to go after Ashley DeMarco checked it away from Clift, and that set up a tense final minute. Lauren Rutledge's free-position try was saved by Ameigh with 38 seconds left, but Rutledge got her own rebound and tried again only to be stopped by Gunther's check. Ameigh came up big again in the final seconds, stopped two Webber shots before gaining possession and holding on in the crease for the win.

LVC will visit Misericordia on Wednesday.
