NEW YORK, N.Y. - Lebanon Valley College went cold over the final 9:14 against Endicott on the opening day of CCNY's Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, as the Gulls outscored LVC, 17-7. The 10-point swing turned what was an eight-point LVC lead into a 57-55 Endicott advantage at the final buzzer, handing the Flying Dutchmen their first loss of the season.
Suzie Noyes was the game's leading scorer, going 7-for-15 from the field for the Flying Dutchmen, good for 20 points. Eryn Schultz followed with 17 points - including five three-pointers. Those five treys were her only field goals of the game, however, as she went just 5-of-17 from the field.
The Gulls had three players in double figures, led by Kate Kovach's 16. Ceciley Chisholm (13) and Ashley Wilson (12) also scored in double digits for Endicott. Chisholm put her 13 points together with 10 rebounds for the game's lone double-double.
LVC's troubles came after the solid 1-2 punch of Noyes and Schultz. Combined, the two accounted for 12 of LVC's 19 made field goals. Only Sarah Colton had more than four points, scoring seven. Neither team was able to find much scoring from the bench, with LVC scoring seven bench points to Endicott's four.
In the first half, a three-pointer from Kaylin Burke gave Endicott a 13-6 lead. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a 19-4 run over the next 9:08 to take a 25-17 lead with one of Schultz' threes. LVC kept the lead throughout the remainder of the half, climbing as high as nine points after a pair of Andrea Hoover free throws gave LVC a 32-23 lead. Endicott rallied in the final 43 seconds of the opening half, draining a pair of threes to climb back within three at 32-29.
In the second half, the lead changed seven times over the course of the final 20 minutes. LVC climbed back to an eight-point cushion with 9:14 to play when Suzie Noyes nailed a three-pointer, but over the next 4:32, the only point scored were on four Endicott layups as the Gulls evened things up at 48-48. After the Gulls pulled ahead, 52-48, the Dutchmen bounced back on a Schultz three and a Tierney Hiltz layup to retake the lead. The two sides traded buckets, a Brittany Kelleher jumper for Endicott and a layup for Noyes before Kovach drained two freebies to give Endicott a 56-55 lead.
LVC had chances to tie or take the lead, missing four shots over the final 1:43. Andrea Hoover picked a great time for her first steal, picking off Chisholm with 50 seconds left, but LVC turned the ball back over before taking a shot. LVC fouled Burke with 35 ticks left and she missed both, and the rebound was turned over by Kelleher to give LVC another shot. Schultz' three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining was off target and Chisholm went 1-for-2 at the line to extend Endicott's lead to a pair. Noyes had one more last-ditch shot at the buzzer, but it was no good and the Gulls escaped with a win to advance.
LVC falls to 8-1 this season. They will play Jan. 3 against either CCNY or Johnson & Wales in the consolation round of the tournament at 1 p.m.
