ANNVILLE, Pa. - Brianne Tierney has been named the head coach of women's lacrosse at Lebanon Valley College, athletic director Rick Beard '90 M'92 has announced. Tierney will lead the re-introduction of the women's lacrosse program at LVC for the spring of 2010.
Tierney brings a wealth of NCAA Division I experience with her to Annville after tenures as an assistant coach at both Cal and Monmouth. Tierney is a 2007 graduate of Colgate University.
"I want to thank Lebanon Valley College and Rick Beard for giving me the opportunity to bring the women's lacrosse program back to LVC," Tierney said. "I don't think there is a task that's more exciting to a young coach than building a program from the ground up. With the support of the athletic department and the college community, I am eager to start the program off in the right direction, and I am confident we can create a great lacrosse atmosphere."
LVC is bringing back men's and women's lacrosse after a 25-year absence; the College sponsored men's lacrosse from 1965 to 1985 and women's lacrosse from 1975 to 1985. Lebanon Valley will now sponsor 23 NCAA Division III athletic programs. Both lacrosse teams will compete in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
“We are thrilled to welcome Brianne to lead our women’s lacrosse program,” Beard said. “Brianne has a tremendous amount of energy and lacrosse knowledge, and her recruiting experience in the mid-Atlantic region for Cal and Monmouth will be a huge asset for Lebanon Valley College.”
Tierney began her coaching career in 2007-08 at Monmouth University, where she worked with the goalkeepers and offense to help lead the Hawks to a 13-5 record and a berth in the NEC playoffs. In 2008-09, Tierney worked with the University of California’s offense as the Golden Bears went 8-11 and made a run to the MPSF championship game.
During her playing days at Colgate, Tierney was an attacker on two of the Red Raiders' Patriot League championship teams, in 2004 and 2005. Tierney has also served as a lacrosse camp counselor at Princeton and was a middle school field hockey coach in the fall of 2006.
Lacrosse runs deep through the Tierney family; Brianne's father, Bill, is one of the legendary names in collegiate men's lacrosse, having served 22 seasons as the men's head coach at Princeton University and winning six NCAA championships before recently being named the head coach at the University of Denver. Two brothers, Brendan and Trevor, were lacrosse standouts for Princeton, and Trevor is now the top assistant coach at Denver and also coaches for the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. Meanwhile, Brianne's sister, Courtney, played basketball at Franklin & Marshall College and is the head girls' basketball coach at the Pennington School in New Jersey.
