ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College used a big first-half run to take a commanding 34-18 lead over St. Mary's (Md.) and held off a gutty Seahawk charge in the second half to extend its season-opening win streak to seven games with a 67-58 win.
The Flying Dutchmen put together a balanced offensive attack with five players scoring more than nine points. Three LVC players reached double figures, led by Suzie Noyes' 14 points. Eryn Schultz (12) and Liz Borgia (10) were the other Dutchmen in double digits. Schultz was big in the opening half, scoring 11 of her 12 before the break.
Stephanie Saint-Aubin paced St. Mary's with a game-high 25 points. Jamie Roberts dropped in 18 for the Seahawks. Alex Wenger had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The two teams were practically identical from the field, with LVC shooting 42 (22-of-52) while St. Mary's was 22-of-51 for 43%. The difference was LVC's foul shooting. The Flying Dutchmen made 19 of 23 attempts at the line while St. Mary's only hit on 12 free throws. LVC also was a bit better beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers to just a pair for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's actually held a 6-0 lead after 4:17 was played as neither team was able to establish a flow early. LVC was not able to take a lead until just under halfway through the first half when Schultz nailed a jumper to give LVC a 12-10 lead. That bucket was part of a 24-8 run LVC went on over the final 11:13 of the first half to pull away.
Lebanon valley extended its lead to 23 in the second half thanks to a bucket from Andrea Hoover with 16:08 to play. St. Mary's would not go away, however, and closed the gap to 10 with a Jamie Roberts layup with 2:58 to play. Noyes responded with a jumper 25 seconds later and Borgia drained a pair of free throws to give LVC back a 14-point lead and provide enough breathing room for LVC the rest of the way.
The Dutchmen are now 7-0 to start the 2009-10 season. St. Mary's falls to 2-7.
LVC is back home Dec. 17 against Richard Stockton at 7 p.m. to close out the 2009 portion of the schedule.
