GRANTHAM, Pa
. - The Lebanon Valley College women's tennis team faced its stiffest test of the season thus far, but successfully extended its perfect record as it edged Messiah, 5-4, in Commonwealth Conference play Wednesday.

The Dutchmen (12-0, 5-0 CC) assured themselves of at least the #2 seed in the CC playoffs with the win over the Falcons (5-5, 2-1 CC). LVC's final conference match against Elizabethtown (4-0, 4-0 CC) on Oct. 20 will likely determine the #1 seed.

The Dutchmen led 2-1 after doubles, with Sarah Grodzinski and Shayna Heintzelman topping Christie McGinley and Stacey Clark, 8-2, at No. 1, and Tamera Lobb and Lauren Fulmer besting Annie Gotchel and Kristen Chen, 8-5, at No. 2. At No. 3, Messiah's Katie Marstaller and Steph Knepper beat Morgan Brady and Caitlin Bedford, 8-3.

The two sides then split the singles, with Grodzinski and Fulmer highlighting LVC's effort with 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively, over McGinley and Gotchel. Both players improved to 12-0 at singles this season. Brady also picked up a point, defeating Kristen Chen 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6.

Marstaller beat Lobb, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3, and Knepper topped Bedford, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. At No. 2, Clark battled to three with previously undefeated Shayna Heintzelman before winning, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, but the result was academic as LVC had already clinched the match win.

LVC will host Elizabethtown next Tuesday.
